Teeth whitening

Teeth whitening in Casablanca

Teeth whitening lightens the shade of your teeth without filing them. Carried out by a dentist after an examination, it is safer and better suited than products sold without supervision. At the Smiles & Beyond centre in Casablanca, Dr Oussama Baji first checks the health of your teeth and gums, then chooses the right method with you. The centre offers light-activated whitening, among other options.

How does teeth whitening work?

Whitening uses a peroxide-based gel that acts on pigments in the enamel and dentine. It lightens teeth by a few shades from their starting colour, with a result that stays natural. It does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or composite fillings. If you have some on visible teeth, the dentist explains this beforehand to avoid shade differences.

In the clinic or with trays at home?

In the clinic, the dentist applies the gel with gum protection, sometimes with a light: the result is visible in the session. At home, custom trays made from your impressions give gradual whitening with a gel dosed by the dentist. Both can be combined. The choice depends on your sensitivity, the time you have, your starting shade and your goal.

Why avoid miracle products without supervision?

Activated charcoal, lemon, baking soda, strips or gels of uncertain origin: some are abrasive to enamel or badly dosed and can cause sensitivity and gum irritation. Supervised whitening takes your teeth’s condition (cavities, cracks, gum recession) into account first. A prior scaling is often advised.

After whitening: keeping the result

Teeth may be more sensitive for a short time after the session: this is common and temporary. For the first days, avoid coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco and coloured drinks. Regular brushing and check-ups help keep the brightness. How long it lasts varies with your habits. To change the shape of teeth too, veneers are another option.

Who is it for?

  • Your teeth have yellowed with age, coffee, tea or tobacco.
  • You are preparing for an event and want a brighter smile.
  • You want to lighten your teeth before a cosmetic treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Is teeth whitening painful?

It should not be. Temporary sensitivity is possible during or after. The dentist adapts the gel and the time, and can offer desensitising products.

Does whitening damage enamel?

Done by a dentist with suitable products after an examination, it is considered safe for healthy teeth. Repeated or unsupervised use of harsh products should be avoided.

How long does the result last?

It varies from person to person depending on diet, tobacco and hygiene. Limiting coloured drinks and having regular check-ups helps prolong it.

Can teeth with crowns or veneers be whitened?

Whitening only lightens natural teeth. Crowns, veneers and composites keep their shade, so this must be considered, or they may be replaced for a matching colour.

Who should not have their teeth whitened?

With untreated cavities, gum disease, very sensitive teeth, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding, whitening is generally not advised or postponed. The dentist assesses each case.
