Scaling
Teeth scaling and cleaning in Casablanca
Scaling removes tartar, the hardened plaque that sticks to teeth and under the gum and that brushing cannot remove. Left in place, it encourages bleeding gums, bad breath, cavities and eventually gum disease. It is a simple preventive treatment, carried out at the Smiles & Beyond centre with suitable instruments and a polish that leaves teeth smoother.

How is scaling done?
The dentist removes tartar with an ultrasonic device and hand instruments, above and below the gum line. The teeth are then polished to remove surface stains and slow the return of plaque. It is generally well tolerated; local anaesthesia can be offered if you are very sensitive.
How often should you have it done?
Usually once or twice a year, but it depends on your risk: smoking, a tendency to form tartar, fragile gums, braces or a history of gum disease may call for more frequent sessions. The dentist tells you the right frequency.
Scaling or gum treatment?
Scaling cleans the teeth when the gums are healthy or slightly inflamed. With established gum disease (pockets, loss of attachment), deeper treatment called root planing may be needed, with regular follow-up. The assessment tells the two apart.
After scaling
Gums may bleed a little or feel sensitive for a few days, especially if they were very inflamed: this improves with gentle but regular brushing. Scaling is also recommended before whitening or orthodontic treatment.
Who is it for?
- Your gums bleed when you brush or are swollen.
- You have visible tartar or persistent bad breath.

Frequently asked questions
Does scaling damage enamel?
No. Done properly by a dentist, it removes tartar, not tooth. The feeling of more space between teeth comes from tartar no longer filling the gaps.
Does scaling hurt?
Most patients find it well tolerated. With very inflamed gums or sensitive teeth, the dentist adapts the technique or offers local anaesthesia.
Does scaling whiten teeth?
It removes surface stains and can leave teeth cleaner and smoother, but it does not change the natural shade: that is the role of whitening.
Why do my gums bleed?
Most often because plaque and tartar irritate the gum. Scaling, correct brushing and cleaning between teeth help. If bleeding persists, an assessment is needed.
